VOLUME XXX. S. M. PROKUDIN-GORSKY AND HIS TURKESTAN CYCLE OF PHOTOGRAPHS AT THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS OF THE UNITED STATES
The book-album “S. М. Prokudin-Gorsky and His Turkestan Cycle of Photographs in the Library of Congress” of the Cultural Legacy of Uzbekistan in World Collections series is devoted to the life and creative work of one of the most famous photographers of the early 20th century. Due to the acquisition of the master’s heritage by the Library of Congress in 1948, it has remained to this day and is highly demanded by researchers and publishers. Along with photographs, this edition introduces new archival documents about S. M. Prokudin-Gorsky’s travels in 1909 – 1912 across the Russian Empire into scientific circulation for the first time and the events of his biography are being specified. Particular emphasis in the book is placed on the history of his photographing in Central Asia in 1906 and 1911 (three trips within one year) and an alleged travel to this region in 1905. The pages of the volume are marked with QR-codes for scanning with a tablet or smartphone to get additional visual information in 3D format.
The publication is intended not only for members of the academic research community, but also for broad local and foreign audiences, as well as the younger generation interested in the rich cultural heritage of Uzbekistan. The project without any analogue in the world has been carried out due to favourable conditions created in the years of Independence and to the personal attention of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev to such issues as the careful preservation, enrichment and augmentation of tangible and intangible cultural heritage of the Uzbek people.
The multivolume series “The Cultural Legacy of Uzbekistan in World Collections” provides for publication of other books devoted to the unique masterpieces of the historical and cultural legacy of Uzbekistan.
