VOLUME XII THE COLLECTION OF THE STATE MUSEUM OF THE HISTORY OF RELIGION (SAINT-PETERSBURG, RUSSIA)

This book-album presents items from the collection of the State Museum of the History of Religion (St. Peters- burg) related to the spiritual and material culture of Uzbekistan. Within the framework of the project “Cultural Legacy of Uzbekistan”, this collection has for the fi   time become the subject of special study. It presents works of art illustrating various religious beliefs and practices: Zoroastrianism, Buddhism, Judaism and Islam. The collection covers an extended period of time from the 2nd to the 20th centuries and includes both archaeological and ethnographic artefacts as well as works of decorative and applied art.

The publication is intended not only for members of the academic research community, but also for broader do- mestic and foreign audiences and members of the younger generation who are interested in the rich cultural legacy of Uzbekistan. The project which has no equivalent in the world has proceeded thanks to the personal attention of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Shavkat Mirziyoyev, to the issues of carefully preserving, enriching and augmenting the historical, cultural and intellectual legacy of the Uzbek people.

Readers will be able to expand their understanding of the rich culture and art of Uzbekistan by means of the doc- umentary fi       made especially for the project, which are available on the disk accompanying this volume.

Further book-albums are planned in the multi-volume series “Cultural Legacy of Uzbekistan in World Collec- tions” dedicated to unique samples of the historical and cultural legacy of Uzbekistan.
