A Treasure from Bukhara: The Divan of Shahi Firuzkuhi

The manuscript Supplément persan 1960, from the collection of the renowned French collector George Marteau, is a true masterpiece of Persian poetry. It contains the poems of Shahi Firuzkuhi, a talented poet from Herat.

The manuscript, dated 920/1514–1515, was copied by the talented calligrapher Sultan-Ali Mashhadi, probably in Mashhad, where he lived at the time. Two miniatures, added later in Bukhara, give the manuscript a special value. One of them is a copy of a work by Sheikh-Zade, but it was most likely executed by another artist. The binding and margins were probably also created in a Bukhara workshop.

The manuscript Supplément persan 1960 has a rich history: it was in the Ottoman Empire, belonging to Haji Ahmed Bostanji-Bashi, and then to Hussein Firuz from the island of Chios. Marteau probably acquired this book in Paris.

Today, this manuscript is a valuable testament to the skill of Persian calligraphers and artists, as well as a reflection of the manuscript's journey through different countries and hands.
