Uzbek artifacts in ethnographic collections of British Museum

Ethnographic artifacts from Uzbekistan arrived at the British Museum in the late 19th century as part of the Lansdell collection.

Most of the Uzbek fabrics were acquired by the museum in the 1990s from travelers and collectors that had visited Afghanistan, Pakistan and Turkey from the early 1970s, as well as Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan from the early 1990s, where they purchased Uzbek artifacts, especially textiles.

The Uzbek ethnographic material in the collections of the British Museum is multifaceted and includes art objects made by nomadic and sedentary rural population, as well as items created in the urban environment.

Uzbek ethnographic collections continue to be displayed at the British Museum as part of thematic exhibitions.
