Carpet products stored in the State Museum of History of Uzbekistan

Carpets and carpet products occupy a prominent place in the Museum’s ethnographic collection.

These are the high pile carpets, flat-woven carpets sholcha gilam, arabi gilam, various torba, khurjun, etc. Among the exhibits are carpet covers for animals, a carpet curtain, used to curtain the entrance to the yurt from the outside, small rugs blocking the threshold, carpet decorative paths, etc. As in other Muslim countries, prayer rugs joinamaz were widely demanded in the everyday life of the local population. Their characteristic feature is the image of a mihrab arch at the top of the composition. In addition to the Central Asian carpets, there are the imported Persian, Azerbaijani, Afghan, and Kashgar carpets.

The base of the collection was made up of arrivals of mainly the 20th century during the planned expeditions to the regions of Uzbekistan and neighboring republics, organized by the Museum. The expeditions were headed by the Museum’s scholars and prominent researchers of the culture of the peoples of Uzbekistan and Central Asia in general, great enthusiasts of the study of folk art – V. G. Moshkova, A. S. Morozova, T. Mirgiyazov, K. Tursunaliev, et al. In total, the Museum keeps 587 items of carpets and carpet products.
