The luxurious house of the Emir of Bukhara on the Petrograd side

Do you know that in Saint Petersburg, near the Karpovka River with a front building and two courtyards at the beginning of the 20th century, when the Petrograd side was actively built up, the house of the Emir of Bukhara appeared?!

The customer was Seyid Abdulahad Khan – the emir of the Bukhara Emirate. The project of the building was developed by the architect S.Krichinsky – unlike the emir, he managed to live in that house.

The emir was involved in the construction of the Saint Petersburg mosque, one of the authors of which was the same Krichinsky, who was responsible for the reliability of quotations from Muslim architecture (for a better acquaintance with the originals, the architect even made a trip to Bukhara).

Modernity

Since the house was given over for communal housing, the interiors and front doors were significantly damaged. Already in the 1990s, marble balusters were knocked down, wall paintings were covered with graffiti, stucco molding and wooden decor elements were significantly damaged. As of 2020, the apartments in the left front entrance have remained communal, the right side of the house has been divided into private apartments.

Interesting Facts

In Soviet times, communal apartments appeared here, as in most apartment buildings of Saint Petersburg, many of which have survived to this day. In 1994, director Vladislav Vinogradov released the film “Kommunalka”, filmed in the house of the Emir of Bukhara.

Legends

Among the old-timers there is a belief that a secret underground passage to the mosque has been laid from the house of the emir on Kamennoostrovsky. Another legend says that a treasure is hidden in the house - the treasures of the emir, which he has left behind, hastily leaving Petersburg.
