The origins of jewelry making in Uzbekistan can be traced back thousands of years. In the 19th century, Khiva, Bukhara, Samarkand, Karshi, and Kokand were the major centers for this craft. Each center had its own distinctive forms and decorative elements in jewelry.
Decorations were evidence of the age and social status of the owner, endowed with various magical properties and considered amulets. Girls from infancy wore earrings and bracelets for the purpose of a talisman. As they matured, jewelry became more visible. Girls wore the fullest and richest sets on their wedding day. The jewelry completely covered the bride’s head and neck, framing her face. They not only decorated her but testified to the prosperity of the family, and, according to legends, protected from the evil eye. In general, they can be divided into several groups: head, forehead-temporal, on plait, nose, ear, neck, chest, axillary, waist, wrist, occipital and their sets of all types. The weight of the set could reach 5 kg.
