In plan, the fortress is a square building with strong brick walls, each of which is 54 m long. Towers on all sides of the fortress protected the structure from enemies.
Legends associated with the fortress
The name Kirk Kiz translates as "forty maidens" and legends associate it with a folk tale about the brave Princess Gulayim and her army, consisting of forty girls who defended the fortress from attacking nomads.
According to another version, within the walls of Kirk-kiz there was a women's madrasah or a women's Sufi khanqah — the rarest institution in Central Asia, which is still sometimes found in the region.
