Unexpected Private Uzbek Collection in Turin

The Shalimar collection deserves to be in the Turin Museum of Oriental Art since it includes striking examples of Uzbek artistic culture.

Among them are a rectangular tile decorated with a relief carved geometric pattern painted with turquoise and manganese glaze and a fragment of a figured tile decorated with two panels with floral motifs.

Both examples are similar to those used in the facing of the mausoleums belonging to the Shakhi Zinda burial complex.

The same collection includes a fragment of a cuerda seca tile decorated with yellow, pale green, turquoise and white motifs from the Abdul Aziz Khan Madrasah in Bukhara.

Last but not least, this collection includes a square marble panel and a fragment of a rectangular marble panel.

Similar panels (friezes) can be seen on the cenotaphs of the Gur-Emir mausoleum.
