Sir William Burrell (1861 – 1958) was a Glasgow merchant shipping owner.

He amassed an impressive collection of art that included ancient antiquities from Egypt, Mesopotamia, and the Mediterranean; Oriental art from the Islamic Middle East, India, Central Asia and China, Medieval and Renaissance European art, and modern Western art. Totalling over 8 500 items, the collection was gifted in 1944 by Sir William and his wife, Lady Constance, to the City of Glasgow to be displayed in a dedicated museum named after him.

You can learn more about the topic in the book-album “The Cultural Legacy of Uzbekistan in the Collections of Great Britain” (Volume XLVI) in the series "Сultural legacy of Uzbekistan in the world collections".

The main sponsor of the project is the oilfield services company Eriell-Group.
