By the decision of the government of Uzbekistan, the State Public Library in Tashkent was declared the Central repository of oriental manuscripts of the republic in 1933.
The Department of Oriental Manuscripts was formed simultaneously with the foundation of the Tashkent Public Library in 1870, but it developed extremely slowly. Almost twenty years later (in 1889) the collection of manuscripts kept in the Tashkent Public Library comprised only 87 manuscript volumes.
