The Deggaron Mosque is situated in the ancient settlement of Hazora in the Navoi region. According to specialists, it was built in the 11th century on the site of an older structure dating back to the 7th-9th centuries, and is the region’s oldest surviving mosque.
It was built near a quarter, whose residents used to produce ceramic boilers (Dek-garon).
Hazora was a mid-size town during the Middle Ages, and Arabic sources refer to a canal dug nearby. The city was responsible for protecting the border of the Bukhara oasis with the «Great Steppe,» and was a link in the «Kampir-duval» fortification system.
The Deggaron Mosque is built in the form of a cube topped with domes that rest on four huge columns of burnt brick. Other walls were made from raw brick, but are covered on the outside by burnt brick.
The Deggaron Mosque is distinguished by its humble and ascetic appearance. As one of Central Asia’s most ancient mosques, it is a particularly valuable architectural monument.
